Letters From North America |

Stop me if I’ve told you this before. I have been having ‘senior moments’ and can’t seem to remember anything. I’m not sure if this is because I’m too busy, or if I don’t really care. Who knows? Who cares? Anyway, some years ago I was with a group from our church visiting some folks in prison. I struck up a conversation with one of the inmates and asked him what he was going to do once he got out of this place. He told me that he didn’t think he would ever get out, and really didn’t want too. This was kind of a surprise to me and I asked why he answered this way.”Well, you see in here I don’t have to make any decisions. They are all made for me. What to wear, when to eat, what time to get up and when to go to bed. A pretty simple life.” Now this isn’t my idea of life, but everyone looks at it a little differently, don’t they? Having said all that, where this is leading me…is to say that I’ll bet that old boy in prison doesn’t have to make any choices when it comes to what kind of coffee he drinks. I’ll bet it’s either black or with cream or sugar. This morning I stopped by what we used to call a convenience store. That started out being a gas station, then they started selling bread, milk and cigarettes. Now, you’ll find they have an ATM machine, a deli, maybe a pizza parlor and Lord knows what else. This one had one of those snazzy coffee bars. You could order about 25 kinds of coffee. Kind of like those places we went for ice cream, only these are for coffee. You can get caffeinated, decaffeinated, mocha, latte, iced, or the ever popular…’flavor of the day.’ Whatever that happens to be. I suppose they have diet and non-dietetic coffee as well. Probably salt free if you look hard enough. Anyway, all I wanted was a plain old cup of coffee with some plain old cream and sugar. Now, the confusing part of this exercise is as follows. When you get Jamaican Almond Roast and you put French Vanilla cream in with it, what results will you get? On the other hand if you use Irish Cream with Creole Pecan Praline, do those two get along well enough so as not to start an international incident? Can you use Amaretto cream with French Roast? Maybe we need a chart, to help us identify what cream can blend with what coffee so we don’t end up with something like Strawberry Mocha Colombian Roast…..At least we don’t have flavored sugar as of yet. Then we’d really be in a bind. The possibilities are virtually endless. It makes those rules that we learned about mixing our foods properly just go out of the window, doesn’t it? Of course, this isn’t a terrible problem to overcome…you just order coffee, black and don’t do anything to it. Makes your life simple, doesn’t it? But, then I think that’s what the guy in prison told me, wasn’t it? |
