Letters From North America Now that the Clinton fiasco is over, at least for the time being, I want to take a moment to recap what, in my opinion, happened to us as a nation. First, let me say that I would have a hard time identifying myself as either a Republican or a Democrat. I think that you should judge the person for what they are, who they are, and what they stand for, as opposed to just which party the person is identified with. In this situation, I think that mistakes were made all the way around. I don’t think anyone is proud of what Mr. Clinton did or is reported to have done. The office of the President should be an example to all of us in this country, not something that we are ashamed of or want to ignore because it is an embarrassment to us. It was almost as if we wanted to rush through this episode in our history so that we could get on with our nations business. I certainly agree that we have heard and seen quite enough of this entire event to know approximately what happened in the Oval office of the White House. I believe I can spend the rest of my life and not wish to see another photograph of Monica hugging President Bill at some gathering or another. Enough is enough. But what of the greater harm? Was this event just about adultery? I think not. It was about trust. It was about betrayal. It was about dishonor. It was about the same loss of trust and honor that we as a notion experienced when Nixon lied to us in the Watergate era. Oh, we don’t want our leaders to be perfect. We know they all have warts and hidden parts that would be better left unseen. After all, they are human. Maybe in the real context of these events, we want to move on because we ourselves are convicted of our own frailties. Maybe we look into the television and see too much of ourselves and we don’t like what we see. It hurts us when we find out that our heroes….aren’t always heroes. We are a young nation, just over 200 years old. This was only the second time in our nations history that this has happened. I don’t think we were prepared for it. Anymore than we are prepared to accept that someone we respect, has lied to us. It reminds me of the movie, the Wizard of Oz. If you remember, at the end you found that the entire operation of the City of Oz was really just a little old man, behind a screen, making everyone believe he was something other than who he really was. In a way, that’s what happened to us. Our leaders fooled us. We were lied to, then we were led to believe something would happen, but it didn’t. Mainly because those raising the banner of Inquiry choose to quit because of negative popularity polls. In the end everyone stood around and looked, well…ashamed. No, there weren’t any winners in this deal…..None of us. Perhaps the next mortal who occupies that office will realize that all we want is a truthful answer when there is a problem. We don’t need a Wizard; we need an honest person.
