Letters from North America by Peary Perry
Is it just me or has the world gone mad? I mean everywhere you go these days, you hear these really weird stories that defy logic. When I was a kid we heard stories about strange men that had gotten shocked by high voltage or something and could only come out at night because they were allergic to sunlight and they hung around places where kids went to park. Or the one where some guy is fixing a leak on his sink in his robe and a dog comes up and sticks his nose…..well, you know …and the guy gets so startled that he bangs his head on the pipe and knocks himself out. His wife calls an ambulance, the EMT guys arrive, load the poor fellow on a stretcher. When they hear what happened they drop him and break his arm. Is this true or not? Now, some of these have been around so long, they begin to be taken as gospel. I wonder if the tales that are currently going around will stay long enough to become legends? For example….”I worked with an individual who plugged their power strip into itself and for the life of them could not figure out why their computer wouldn’t turn on…” Is anyone this dumb? How about….” I recently saw a distraught young woman crying beside her car. “Do you need some help?” I asked. She replied, “I knew I should have replaced the battery in this remote door unlocker…Now I can’t get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience store) would have batteries for this?” “Hmmm, I don’t know…Do you have an alarm also?” I asked. “No, just this remote thingy,” she answered, handing it and the car keys to me. As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I replied, “Why don’t you drive over there and check the batteries…it’s a long walk.” If that’s not bad enough, how about this one…”I was in a car dealership the other day when a large motor home was towed into the garage. The front of the vehicle was in dire need of repair and the whole thing looked like an extra from the movie “Twister”. I asked the manager what had happened. He told me that the driver had set the cruise control, then went back to make a sandwich…” Try this one…”This person had a broken lamp which he wanted to throw away. Unfortunately the power cord ran under his refrigerator, making it impossible to move the lamp while the cord was attached. Since the lamp was not usable anyway, he decided to just cut the cord. He didn’t remember to unplug it first. When I found him after hearing a lot of loud screams, I found him in the hallway rolling back and forth….” Is this dumb….but believable? Now this last one appealed to me since I had a secretary that did the same thing once several years ago…..”Some time ago we had a new intern that wasn’t really swift. One day he was typing and turned to a secretary and said…”I’m almost out of typing paper, what do I do?” “Just use copy paper,” she told him. With that, the intern took his last remaining blank sheet of paper, put it on the copier and proceeded to make five blank copies. “Well, some of these are a stretch to your imagination, but since we are dealing with humans , nothing can be ruled out , can it? I’ll be on the lookout for new ones. Send me some of yours if you think about it….I’ll bet we could do a book that we could title something like…”People Do the Darnest Things…” Might be a best seller. Take care…..see you next week.
